"Example is not the main thing in influencing others, it's the only thing."
In the book Communicating Change a story is related in which a quality problem has been encountered. Without fanfare, production supervisors were called to a meeting in which the product and four other competitors products were displayed - in pieces. Placards showed the quality problems in their product compared to the competition. Within several days 96% of front-line employees heard about the situation, 96% knew where they stood in the ranking of products, and 83% could name three or more faults attributed to their area. It is so much better to show rather than tell when communicating change.
