"It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it."
So many times change initiatives fail because the change isn't reinforced. Worse, often there is a disincentive to perform the new behavior. Change leaders should consider the reward systems, both intrinsic and extrinsic in place within the organization before embarking on a change effort. Does the reward system need to change to be consistent with the desired new behavior? This could be an even bigger change than the original idea being contemplated. Make sure the leadership of the organization is on board and pave the way with the compensation experts in Human Resources.
