"People see only what they are prepared to see." 'Journals," 1863
Laying the foundation for change is something that begins before the change effort officially gets underway and is something that must continue throughout the life of the change project. As change leaders we frequently make the mistake of assuming the reasons for change are obvious. Once we have convinced ourselves, it is easy, (though erroneous) to conclude that everyone we come into contact with has the same information and has had the luxury of digesting this information to understand the change initiative as we do.
Our constituents seldom comprehend the impact of all aspects of the change project. Also, new constituents arrive regularly and don't have the benefit of the past. Successful change leaders will summarize the vision of the enhanced environment and the effort it will take to get there so constituents can "catch-up" as quickly as possible.
Only when people are prepared to see (by the change project manager) will they see what is necessary to successfully implement the change.
