“Every new adjustment is a crisis in self esteem.”
The biggest fear regarding change is the fear of the unknown. I’m comfortable now. I won’t be comfortable when the change is introduced. Things will be different. For the most part we know from experience that we will also become comfortable with the new way. It just takes time. Resistance usually goes deeper than this though. We question not only our comfort but more importantly will we have the skills to survive in the new environment? Will we still enjoy the respect of our peers since we definitely won’t be as “good” at the job any longer? Dealing with the competency issues and ensuring that our change constituents are ready for the new environment goes a long way to creating a comfortable transition for those affected by the change initiative.
