Only Change the Date Once

The delivery date in many large change projects is chosen arbitrarily, sometimes based on ego or the political climate. At the start of a large initiative with many unknowns it is difficult to establish a firm date. However, the project plan requires an end date. It's OK to set an estimated delivery date in the future. But, the change leader must not forget how this date was set and more importantly should regularly remind key constituents as well. As soon as possible, do the analysis necessary to identify a delivery date that is feasible. The key - only change this date once with solid analysis behind the revision. No one remembers missing the first date, no one forgets missing the second date.
